Background

Remote Sensing, Geographical Information System (GIS) and Satellite Positioning and Navigation Systems have emerged as powerful tools for planning, monitoring and evaluation of developmental activities, informed decision making in governance and generating scientific inputs for understanding Earth’s surface processes besides surveying and mapping applications. These technologies, along with other enabling technologies, particularly IT and mobile technology, have witnessed a phenomenal growth in recent times from the point of view of sensor technology for spatial data capturing, to methods and processes for information extraction, to information diffusion, and even to involving people in contributing data and making informed decisions.

Indian Society of Remote Sensing (ISRS) and Indian Society of Geomatics (ISG), the two premier professional societies dedicated to promotion and dissemination of remote sensing & GIS in India, jointly conduct annual conventions and national symposia, providing an excellent platform and opportunity to scientists, researchers, practitioners, entrepreneurs and students to exchange their research ideas, discuss formulation and implementation of policies, update knowledge base, and interact with experts and peers. Continuing this rich tradition, a national symposium on “Recent Advances in Remote Sensing and GIS with Special Emphasis on Mountain Ecosystems” is being organised during December 7-9, 2016 at Dehradun, the capital of the hilly State of Uttarakhand (India) and the headquarters of ISRS.

The symposium will be hosted jointly by Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (IIRS) and ISRS – Dehradun Chapter. Incidentally, IIRS, the main organisation behind founding of ISRS in 1969, is celebrating 2016 as its Golden Jubilee year after completing its 50 glorious years in capacity building.

Symposium Theme & Sub-Themes and Call for Papers

The theme of the national symposium and ISRS & ISG annual conventions is “Mountain Ecosystems.” The theme is chosen considering the fact that mountains have recently been recognised as globally important ecosystems as about half of the humanity depends directly or indirectly on the ecosystem goods and services being provided by them. With the increasing realisation of the inherent fragility and vulnerability of the mountains to anthropogenic pressures and climate change, a scientific and integrated approach is the key to monitor and understand mountain processes and to formulate policies for ensuring sustenance of the ecosystem services. Space technology can play an important role in addressing this requirement.

Original unpublished research papers in the following thematic areas are invited from India and abroad for presentation (oral and poster) during the symposium:
  • Advances in EO Sensors & Processing Techniques
  • Advances in GIS
  • RS & GIS Applications (emphasis on Mountain Ecosystems & Development)
  • - Agriculture
    - Water Resources, Snow & Glaciers
    - Geosciences & Mineral Exploration
    - Forestry & Environment
    - Soils & Sustainable Land Management
    - Infrastructure & Developmental Planning
    - Energy
    - Atmosphere, Weather & Climate
    - Disaster & Risk Reduction
  • Coastal and Ocean Applications
  • Health GIS
  • UAV Remote Sensing and Applications
  • Satellite Positioning & Navigation: IRNSS & GAGAN Systems & Applications
  • Planetary Exploration
  • Capacity Building
The guidelines for preparing the oral and poster presentations by the authors will be available shortly in the symposium website (www.isrs2016.iirs.gov.in). Awards for best oral and poster papers presented during the symposium will be given to professional and students.

In addition to paper presentations, two popular lectures, i.e. Vikram Sarabhai Memorial Lecture of ISRS and Millennium Lecture of ISG, invited and lead talks by experts on symposium theme, presentations by ISRS and ISG awardees, and annual general body meetings of ISRS and ISG will also be organised.
